“Ministry of the Month”

A few years back I came up with the idea that we should have a specific ministry each month that we lifted up and supported through prayer, time, and financial resources. The Lakeside congregation responded in a generous way and the program was quite successful. As time has gone on I sense there is less enthusiasm for the Ministry of the Month. I trust the membership is no less generous than in years past, but the monthly ministries have not been promoted like they were in the past. An example that comes to mind is the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. If the red bucket is sitting there unattended it is easy to just walk on by, but if there is a human face ringing the bell it is hard to walk by and not contribute.

I never intended for the Ministry of the Month to be my ministry. My hope is that certain members would have a real passion for a specific ministry and they would uplift this ministry to the rest of the congregation. They could do this by explaining the ministry through a presentation at worship. Perhaps they would show a video clip or bring in a person to speak from this particular ministry. Some of this originally took place but as of late it has fallen by the wayside. To sum up the current state of affairs with Ministry of the Month, “enthusiasm is lacking”. With this in mind I think it is in the best interest of the congregation to take a break from a monthly special ministry. However, I am very open to having someone or some group come forward to uplift a ministry that they are passionate about. My thought is that we should perhaps do less, but when we do lift up a ministry let’s do it well. I would love for someone to come into my office and tell me that she/he would really like to highlight a ministry such as Feed My Starving Children. My response to you will be, “How can I help you make this happen?”

Please know that giving to those outside of our church family remains at the heart of our ministry at Lakeside. We simply need to take a step back and figure out how to do a better job at this area of our ministry.

God Bless,

Pastor Bill
